by Rebecca Silva & Fabia VieiraCommunity service is more than just something required for members of National Honor Society. Volunteer work can help build not only your resume or college application, but your character as well. We reached out to Lisa Bellantoni here at SST to get her thoughts on her experiences doing community service. SST: How does volunteer work make you feel?
Ms. Bellantoni: It is a great experience. Volunteering is very rewarding. I know that it is making an impact on someone else as well as a personal impact. It makes me a better person for it. I also love to see how the experience affects my students and how it impacts them. SST: What has been your favorite volunteering experience? Ms. Bellantoni: I have done a variety of volunteering. I would say that working with the May Institute and helping run the Special Olympics is probably my favorite. It is great to see the smiles on their students’ faces and how proud they are when they compete in an event. This event is not run without its volunteers so it means a lot to the staff to see our students continuously coming back year after year. SST: Why should everyone do some kind of volunteer work? Ms. Bellantoni: I believe everyone should do some type of volunteering. I feel it genuinely makes you a better person. In some cases it is a reality check and allows one to reflect on what one has or feels they need vs. what they do not. It is also a way to help the communities around your school or place of business. SST: What are some opportunities, inside and outside of school, that you think more students should be involved in? Ms. Bellantoni: Students should definitely get involved in their local communities. There are many opportunities in local food banks, nursing homes, clothing drives, and to work for Habitat for Humanity. On a smaller scale it could just be to help out a neighbor with child care or dog care. It means a lot to just make a connection with another individual, no matter how big the opportunity.
